Barnes, situated on the southern bank of a scenic bend of the River Thames, epitomises the charm and tranquillity of an English village with the added benefit of its proximity to central London. This affluent suburb is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, historical architecture, and strong community spirit, making it a highly sought-after location for families and those seeking a quieter pace of life without straying too far from the urban buzz.
Central to Barnes’ appeal is its village green, the heart of the community, surrounded by quaint shops, independent cafes, and traditional pubs that host a variety of local events throughout the year. This area encapsulates the village atmosphere that is so distinctive to Barnes, with regular farmers’ markets and community fêtes that bring together residents in a celebration of local life.
My favourite pub in Barnes is the Bulls Head, the Young’s pub in Lonsdale Road by the river. Apart from Young’s beer, my preferred real ale (aside from Fuller’s London Pride of course), I see that it is quite gastro these days. It was always great for jazz gigs and they continue this tradition, so if you like jazz, it’s a nice friendly alternative to going up to town for a rather expensive time at Ronnie Scott’s.
Also, if you happen to have children and can afford it, St Paul’s school is nearby so your kids could walk or cycle home easily without you having to manoeuvre your vast 4×4 vehicle along tight spaces.
